How to Draw Line in Photoshop Cc 2015

Draw Lines in Elements

It's easy to draw lines with Photoshop Elements. There's a Line tool designed to do just that. This tutorial will show you where it is located and how to use it to get the lines you want.

This tutorial was inspired by a question from Susan. She is an artist and wanted to know how to draw lines to indicate the distance between different facial features. I thought a face would be a great platform to demonstrate how it works.

Follow these easy steps in Photoshop Elements.

STEP 1
Open an Image to follow along in.

I'll use a picture of my son Carl when he was about 4-years-old.

STEP 2
Select the Line Tool

The Line tool is one of the Shape tools in the Toolbox. There are six Shape tools so chances are the Line tool wont be showing in the Toolbox.

To access it click and hold on the Shape tools and then go down and select the Line tool.

STEP 3
Choose How Thick You Want Your Lines

Go up to the Options bar and click in the Weight field to choose the thickness of your line in pixels. I chose 2 px.

STEP 4
Draw Some Lines and Make Adjustments

Click and drag with your mouse to draw a line. Look at your Layers panel and you will see that Elements created a new Layer for the Line.

If you dont like the thickness of the line press Control-Z (Mac:Cmd-Z) to Undo the line. Then go up to the Options bar and enter a different weight and try drawing another line. Keep doing that until you get the size you want.

Try holding down the Shift key as you click and drag to keep your line perfectly straight.

If you want to make your line shorter or longer press Control-T (Mac:Cmd-T) to go into Free Transform mode. Place your cursor near the Free Transform Handles on either end of the line and move it until you get the horizontal double arrows icon as circled in red below.

Now just click and drag to make the line either shorter or longer.

One other option I'd like to show you is how to change the color of your lines. Your lines will be whatever your Foreground color is set to in the top overlapping square at the very bottom of the Toolbox.

If after you draw a line and you want to change its color you can click on the square box in the Options bar and choose a color from the Dialog box that opens.

STEP 5 (Optional)
Add Arrows To Your Lines

If you want arrows on the ends of your lines you need to make another trip up to the Options bar. Click on the tiny arrow next to the Line icon. An Arrowheads menu will pop up where you can make some choices for adding arrowheads to the ends of your lines.

The best advice I can give you here is to just experiment with the settings until you get something you like. Choose your arrowhead settings, draw a line. If you don't like it do a Control-Z (Mac:Cmd-Z) to undo it. Adjust your settings and try again.
